Author Elmore Leonard’s funeral was held in Burmingham Michigan on Saturday August 24, 2013.  Over 300 people gathered at the Holy Name Catholic Church to say their farewells to Leonard.

Reverend Joe Grimaldi gave the eulogy.  Leonard’s  sons Peter, Bill and Christopher also spoke.  Son Peter recalled how his father always got stopped at airport check points for trying to carry on various items, from scissors and shampoo to an excessive amount of athletes foot powder.

“His favorite letters were from convicts”  Peter Leonard said eliciting laughter.

His son Bill told the crowd that everyone knew that Elmore was a great writer but only a few people knew that he was a great father, funny, patient and incredibly generous.

Leonard wrote westerns for years before he began to write crime novels.  His work has been adapted into dozens of movies and tv shows including the FX drama Justified.

“Raylan”, published in 2012, stands as Leonard’s final novel.  He was at work on a new novel at the time of his death entitled “Blue Dreams”.  That novel would again have featured Raylan Givens, Justified’s U.S. Marshal.

Justified star Timothy Olyphant attended the funeral.  He described the funeral as “lovely”.  Olyphant stated he was a huge fan of Leonard’s books and that he felt very blessed to have known him.

Following the service Leonard, who served as a navy seaman during World War II, was given military honors.  This included taps being played and a flag folding ceremony.

His friend Mike Lupica, a sportswriter, declared “He lived a great American life”.

Justified Author Elmore Leonard Dies at 87

Timothy Olyphant & Elmore Leonard

Author Elmore Leonard died early Tuesday, August 20th. He had been hospitalized after suffering a stroke.  He was surrounded by family according to his long time research assistant, Greg Sutter.  Leonard was 87.
Leonard made a living writing advertising copy during his early days as a struggling writer.  He had success with western stories, publishing several in western magazines.  He found some success with 3:10 to Yuma, which was made into a movie starring Glenn Ford in 1957.  His western novel “Hombre” was also made into a film in 1966 starring Paul Newman.
When the popularity of the western began to fade so did interest in Leonard’s work. That is when he began to write the gritty crime novels that brought him fame.  His first crime novel “The Big Bounce” was rejected 84 times before being published as a paperback.  It was later made into a movie starring Ryan O’Neal that even Leonard said was terrible.
His first bestseller didn’t happen until the author was 60 years old.  “Glitz” became his first bestseller in 1985.  A novel of vengeance set in Atlantic City.
Hollywood began to love him again and several of his books got film treatments including Get Shorty, and Rum Punch (Jackie Brown).  A lot of them missed the mark when it came to getting Leonard’s humor and style.
Graham Yost did not miss the mark on Leonard’s humor or style.  Yost took the character Raylan Givens from Leonard’s short story “Fire In The Hole” and produced a television series “Justified” for FX Networks.  Givens is perhaps the coolest lawman on television.  His charm, humor and old west sense of justice has kept Givens true to Leonard’s character.  Elmore was so inspired by Timothy Olyphant’s portrayal of Givens he wrote a new novel based on the character, “Raylan”

Timothy Olyphant Talks Wild West

Tim at the Rango Premiere

Tim at the Rango Premiere

Join the National Geographic channel to learn about the real Wild West. The West was wild long before a cowboy ever rode horse across the plains. And this National Geographic series will prove the fact.

This three part series will explore the animal world of the West. The series is titled The Wild West. It consists of three one hour episodes, Gold Rush, High Noon and True Grit. Learn about the real outlaws in the west, the untamed animals that call America their home. Learn about elephant seals, black and brown bears and bobcats. See how they settle scores in the animal kingdom.

The series explores the animal world of the West as we see how they obtain food, shelter and survive the everyday trials of life. It is a fascinating look into a world humans rarely get the chance to see.

Timothy Olyphant narrates the three part series beginning with Gold Rush. This episode features how the smallest mouse to the largest bobcat face survival. See in brilliant detail, the upstream migration of the Alaskan salmon. Then get an inside view to the animals that call the Redwood Forest home. Snakes, owls, bobcats and mice wage a battle of survival among the tallest trees in the world.

The second installment is High Noon. Embark on a journey to the most desolate region of the West, the desert. Only the strong survive here. The toughest of the tough call the desert home. Meet the vultures – the undertakers of the desert, hawks and scorpions. Hawks hunt the desert like gangs and scorpions find food sources in other scorpions. It is a dog eat dog world.

The third and final installment is True Grit. Meet the inhabitants of the Rocky Mountains. This is where the gray wolves, feared and respected, reside. Learn how they fight, hunt and keep order in the pack. You will also meet another animal feared throughout their territory, the grizzly bear. Learn how they teach their young to survive in the mountains. This episode also features bronc busters. These tough cowboys take on the wild horse, using generations old techniques. It is man verses beast.

Timothy Olyphant, star of FX’s hit show Justified, is the perfect narrator for this series. Olyphant is no stranger to the Wild West himself, having played tough western lawmen Seth Bullock in HBO’s Deadwood and Marshal Raylan Givens in Justified. His soft yet steely voice lets the story flow along with ease.
The National Geographic Channel will be airing all three episodes of The Wild West on Saturday, August 3rd. The first episode airs at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. The episodes will air back to back with the final one airing at 10:00 p.m. ET.

Timothy Olyphant Throws First Pitch for Dodgers

Timothy Olyphant Throws Out Ceremonial First Pitch At Dodgers Game

Take me out to the ballgame! Who could resist a game that has Raylan Givens throwing out the first pitch. That is exactly what the fans at the L.A. Dodgers and San Francisco Giants baseball game got to witness Wednesday, June 26th.

Timothy Olyphant stepped up to the plate and threw the first pitch to start off the game. The Justified star brought luck to the Dodgers as they won the game 4 to 2. Olyphant was joined by good friend, Eric Stonestreet, who seemed to be giving him advice on his big moment. Tim sported a Dodgers jersey as he stepped onto the mound.

By all accounts the pitch he threw was a curveball. Typical Raylan style. Just when u think you have him figured out he throws you a curve! Seeing as how Raylan loves baseball, I hope the boy in Olyphant was as thrilled as I know the boy in Raylan would have been.

Hats off to the Dodgers for inviting Mr. Olyphant to throw the first pitch. All the Justified fans salute you!
